After Care for Teeth Sealants

October 18, 2024 2 min read By Archer Dental

Teeth sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your child's molars to prevent cavities. After the procedure, your child may not notice any difference, but it's important to follow proper aftercare to ensure the sealants stay intact and do their job. Here's what you need to know.

01

How long should my child wait to eat?

Your child can eat as soon as the sealant procedure is finished. The sealant material hardens quickly under a special curing light, so there's no need to wait. However, it's a good idea to encourage your child to stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on the sealants. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can wear down or damage the sealants.

Good news for kids (and parents): no waiting around. They can head straight to lunch, just save the gummies and pretzels for tomorrow.

How should I care for my child's sealants?

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is key to keeping the sealants effective. Here are a few care tips:

  • Make sure your child continues to brush twice a day and floss regularly to maintain good oral health.
  • Encourage them to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens that could chip the sealants.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups so we can monitor the sealants and confirm they're protecting the teeth properly.
  • Sealants typically last several years but should be checked at every visit for any wear and tear.

Sealants are one of the simplest, most effective ways to prevent cavities in growing teeth. If you've got siblings who haven't had theirs yet, we can usually book the whole crew in one trip.

When should I call the office?

If your child mentions discomfort that lasts more than a day, or if you notice that the sealants appear damaged or chipped, it's important to call our office. We can assess the condition of the sealants and provide any necessary repairs or adjustments.

Sealant chipped or fallen out? Bring them in.

Call Archer Dental at (773) 581-1345. A damaged sealant is a quick fix, and replacing it keeps the protection going. We'll work around school and after-school schedules where we can.
